Most people only attend an eye test, when they experience a problem. However, it is very important to have an eye checkup even when there are no symptoms. Thus, underlying eye diseases can be found that so far have not caused problems, because they are only at an initial stage. That offers a chance for more successful treatment options and better long term visual outcomes.
When there are symptoms or problems, these are the most common ones that require urgent medical attention:

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a comprehensive eye evaluation at the age of 40. At this age, the age-related visual deterioration begins, and also, the signs of internal medicine diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes can also be apparent at the back of the eye (i.e. retina) even when no symptoms are present. This is also a typical age when it is recommended to first screen for glaucoma and cataract. Based on this evaluation the eye care specialist can recommend how often future tests should be timed. Early diagnosis enables effective treatment and good long term vision and consequently a better quality of life.
When there is increased risk, for example diabetes, high blood pressure or eye disease in the family, it is even more important to have your eyes checked.
